Life Needs Whipped Cream

Since I am not a cardio buff, I have become a diet buff. Diet as in cut carbs, eat lime soaked salad, do light walking and wear an iron maiden waist corset. It beats sweating in spinning class. I dislike sweat. It messes up the very well maintained hair. The downside to this plan is the mass cutting of sweets and particularly, of whipped cream on lattes and blended coffee drinks.

I love whipped cream.

For the last three months I have binged on tomato salsa, lean turkey and a sporadic baked potato. While painful, it definitely helped me from a size 5 to a size 3, thus getting rid of holiday pounds that last well past Christmas, possibly into the next Christmas (and the next, and the next). You HAVE to be vigilant or suddenly you will have a permanent position as Santa!

I had no cookies, no pasta, hardly any milk, thousand grain bread only for breakfast, and major salad, lentils and vegetables up to 7 PM. And lots of tea and water. And during it all I wanted to eat everything!!! Chocolate, cookies, donuts, the house, the moon. Not humans, I would NEVER want to eat people – too tough.

Discipline is a bitch, but it does produce results. I look hot. I’ve really stopped smiling though.
Discipline unfortunately is not static. It’s not like I can go forth and slay Dunkin Dounuts and still be okay. I did that up to age 33 and nothing happened. I remained a size 2 forever, until 36 hit and I suddenly became a bit voluptuous. And after eating the house on Christmas 2013 I put on 15 pounds!

WHA!!!!! ME????
Yes. Me.

So it’s all about either getting up and moving to discipline, or constantly sacrificing for discipline to get results. Fine, I accept this.

But life in its totality must include some whipped cream.  Maybe not the entire can, all at once (unfortunately).  But twice a month on a mocha frappuchino is a must. Or why even bother?
You see, before I began to write this, I went to Nordstrom’s cafĂ© for a mocha blended storm. It’s better, in my humble opinion, than Starbucks. The wonderful young lady looked at me and asked “Would you like the whipped cream?” And at that moment I realized if I said no I’d burst into tears, so I said “Absolutely!” And then upon finding out my name (for the mocha), the two baristas burst into song – Astrud Gilberto’s “Girl from Ipanema” and the world became a better place.

There is discipline, and then there is joie de vivre. And there is the wisdom to find a happy medium.

Love,

Astrid Franchiska

Days at Bal Harbour Beach

Bal Harbour (yes, the 'u' is added) is my most favorite beach, and it has been ever since I was a teenager...long, long ago...

Anyway, I tend to frequent the beach on Sunday afternoons. The water is usually calm, and it hits the knee level for quite a ways out. It's a very kid oriented beach - what's special is that it's a beach where the bay meets the ocean, so it appears as bay, wide river/canal and ocean.

This day (May 3rd I think?) was interesting, because of who I now deem 'weird man'. With affection, we're all allowed to be weird.

Weird man, all donned in a blue speedo, has this HUGE net and is casting the net for fish in two feet deep water...OK. He did this for about an hour. The only fish that are in this area are small silver-ish guppy looking things smaller than your pinky finger. OK.

I pretended to take a selfie (he saw me after a while). I would never take a selfie at the beach after going into the water. Not a chance in hell. And NO ONE dares take my photo. Wet hair photos are forbidden, and punishable by torture.

After some time, Weird Man went off with his net and a white bucket. I hope he found what he was looking for! Totes!

Have fun,

Astrid Franchiska

Waterways Marina

Welcome to my second home!

Yes, another Marina/Yacht video. That's what my life is made of...

I dislike swimming, but love Marinas. I can't even explain that. Nonetheless, this is my sacred energizing spot. Mind you I live in one of the Aventura Marinas, but this Marina is my favorite, it's so secluded, and it's especially made for super yachts to dock. My favorite super yacht is Il Piacere - it's not here today though.

This Is A Woman’s World

Well, maybe not quite, but we stay optimistic!

When I was 7 years old my parents got divorced. It was a relief to be honest. Divorce isn’t unusual now, but to be divorced after 21 years of marriage in the 1980s was a complete blow to my mother. My father lucked out. He got everything – house, car, properties. He got everything except me. And I became the rock upon which my mother rebuilt her life.

I remember sitting with her during one night, when she needed to make a decision whether to stay in my grandparents’ house a while longer, to rent nearby for a bit, or to immediately rebuild a house from scratch, moving fully independently on her own. She was troubled, depressed and doubtful. Somewhere in my young mind I realized that if she didn’t decide to be fully independent now, she would remain emotionally broken. So I made the decision for her. I said to her “Mummy, build the house; even if we have to eat biscuits and water, we’ll do it.” And so, my life consisted of school by morning, construction project manager by afternoon. The house was built, and 30 years later she keeps adding annexes to it!

Let it be made quite clear that I do not consider myself particularly suppressed by men. On the contrary! My mother’s divorce actually put me in a position to be highly regarded by my grandfather, my uncles and male family, and from a very early age I was exposed to their world. The man’s world of discussing politics while women cooked in the kitchen; the world of martial arts and blood brother fights; the world of hunting, and of considering women to be objects. They treated me the way mother cats treat an abandoned puppy – they know it’s from the opposite camp, but somehow it deserves equal attention and respect due to its will to live. My opinion was fully counted, even sought as the intelligent child who gave good advice. And I’ve carried this anomaly in my business blueprint ever since. As one of my guy BFFs say, “born tough, raised though.”

And here we have the point – knowledge itself isn’t enough, we need acceptance into the realm, not only as support, but as pack members. This is why although there are so many more women in college than men (knowledge), the acceptance really dwindles past middle management (senior acceptance).  All in all, it takes strong mentorship and a solid network to succeed for any professional of any gender. That is fact. And it is double fact for women. So here are my suggestions for girls, professional women and women business owners:

Girls:
·         It’s quite alright to go play in the mud and climb the tree. And run track. And be a black belt.
·         It’s equally okay to be cute and wear pink and have a Barbie doll. Just know when to flip the switch.
·         You need to read the newspapers from the time you can read, and stun them at show and tell.
·         Have intellectual conversations with teachers who would pay you attention. It helps your knowledge build, and increases confidence with authority figures.

Professional Women:

If you have chosen to climb the corporate ladder and become one of the first female CEO in your field, you will need:

·         College degrees with a strong GPA: Bachelor’s and MBA’s a must. Other post-graduate degrees preferred.
·         Continued professional development: CPA, PMP, CFA designation etc.
·         Early membership into specific professional associations: The CFA Institute, PMI etc. Try to do this from as early as freshman year in college.
·         Two mentors. Preferably a senior female mentor in your professional field, and a male personal life coach (it was my preference in the corporate world).
·         After hours in the office is a must; not every day, but on days when senior management stays late as well. Then you have presence for informal discussions and rapport building.

Business Owners:

If you, intrepid female, have decided to go the entrepreneurial path, you will need:

·         A strong Board. It is advisable to have a split responsibility at the Board level, meaning, a general Board of Directors, accompanied by an Advisory Board. On this Advisory Board, ensure that you have diverse gender expertise.
·         Cash Flow: This is an issue. Women are more susceptible to be taken for a ride in terms of 1. Being introduced to strong funding avenues. 2. having clients honor contract payments. I’ve seen it over and over again. A strong banker, accountant and business lawyer are a must.
·         A network from heaven:
o   It is no surprise that women business owners like to do business with other women-owned businesses, and why not? We are able to build our own women-speak and there is a higher degree of trust.
o   Still, it is important to network with traditional institutions and learn the language. Become familiar with traditional Chambers of Commerce and social clubs that really understand the constructs of our current business systems.

It’s a man’s world in terms of building and operating the system of laws, constructs, businesses, and almost every other process that exist. And, since it takes two to tango, I would dare to say that women throughout history have agreed to have the system take shape as such. How wonderful it is to be able to trust that chosen gender roles and responsibilities can be fostered for the betterment of a community and society.  However, when that trust is broken on a continued systematic level, how does a woman still operate in a man’s world? We missed the memo for a few centuries well, and there is still a lot to figure out. Now, should it be a woman’s world? Many argue that there would be more peace and progress. I don’t necessarily think so. Any form of bias causes imbalance. The more each gender can equally focus on the ideas, the problems and the solutions that can bring this world to sustainable progress, the more we can regain that lost balance.

Princess Leia: Rebellion; Leadership and Vulnerability

“Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope!”

This is the last thing Senator Leia Organa ever thought she would have to say, through a little R2-D2 droid no less. It had come to this. The Rebellion was frozen – everyone was now captured by the Empire. Things looked hopeless. Princess Leia, much more an activist than a princess, would never negotiate with the Empire. No amount of torture or coercion could ever warrant negotiation with such violent autocracy. Rebel against tyranny or die trying was the motto of the Rebellion. And as the top rebel leader, Senator Organa was not about to set any base example of compromise, even if it meant death.

Indeed, death by Vader’s hands seemed quite forthcoming.

Princess Leia is the ultimate tough cookie. Very much a diplomat and politician like her real mother and adopted parents, yet unyielding like her nemesis father. Throughout the Star Wars prequels Leia displays very forthright, almost stereotypical masculine leadership skills with the Rebellion and the Jedi command. Her attitude to high authority is that of fellowship, as is expected from a Princess and Senator. Yet her warmth towards the wookies, her care for her loved ones, and universal concern for the welfare of a galaxy is unsurpassed. In fact, Leia’s alpha female leadership style would not have encompassed helplessness and vulnerability if there was a balance in the Force. Yet, it was that vulnerability, that call for help that set the ball rolling for the return of the Jedi, and a balance between the Light and Dark.

Alpha leaders prefer to either give commands or do it themselves. To ask is to go through pain akin to three simultaneous root canals. At that moment when Leia decided to program R2-D2 to seek Obi Wan and secretly present him with the Death Star’s blueprint, she didn't think she had a chance of escape, nor of survival. She was captured, without power of guards, ammunition, title, or any apparent assistance. What she had was hope, a pet droid, the will to act, and most of all, the ability to swallow her pride and seek help, even if it was a long shot.

What is most powerful in Leia’s decision to trust the Force and ask for help on a long shot, is that it began the unraveling of destiny. R2-D2 reached Obi Wan through Luke Skywalker, they both saw her message, and in hiring Han Solo and Chewbacca to rescue Leia, the Light side of the Force was activated. Had Leia decide to not try the long shot, to not ask, and to die silently at Darth Vader’s hands, there would be no new hope. There would be no new heroes! So, who says there isn't great value in vulnerability? There is, and all leader types must attest to this. The point is to have the wisdom to know when to ask for help, and when to take matters in your own hands and strangle the hell out of your enemy with its own chain, while looking hot in a metal bikini.

May the Force be with us…

An appreciative note to Klout

In September 2012 I began following Vala Afshar on twitter, and I learned about so many things digital and social media oriented.

One of these was Klout. I learned that social media influence can be quantified, shared, and rewarded.

For the past two years I have had such a wonderful relationship with Klout, that is was worth making a video for!

I am grateful for the vote of confidence, the ability to support my peers, to share pertinent information via Klout, and of course, for the #kloutperks - I truly enjoy the service!

When I think of Klout and the various brands that Klout works with, I will always think of generosity.

Kindness is amazing :)

Gorgeous view from the Aventura Performing Arts Center

The view is exquisite! It's a 180 degree view of Hidden Bay's marina, the entire bay, Sunny Isles on Collins Avenue, and the island that will soon become Prive Island. Really a beautiful vista!

The world can be such a beautiful place...

It's so surreal to be expressing after 6 months of deep introspection. What a wonderful mirror it is. I've needed my own platform for expression for a while now, and here we are!

It really has been and continues to be a long walk to understanding for me. It's important to understand what drives people and situations - so much goes on beneath the surface of emotions and decisions that we take for granted. It takes work, but it's worth it to really have true progress.

Let's see where the path takes us...
